Wondering why you should move to solid shampoo? Your question is completely legitimate: adopting solid shampoo is a big change in your habits – habits that you’ve had since many, many years.
Solid shampoos are increasingly known for their more positive impact on the environment. Sold in paper boxes or without packaging, they allow you to say goodbye to plastic packaging that take an important space in your bathroom. Is this the only reason to change your habits and say goodbye to liquid shampoos?
A better alternative for your hair and scalp health:
In addition of being a environmentally clean alternative, a good solid shampoo will help you improve your hair and scalp health. Indeed they are very rich in active ingredients: clays, ayurvedic powders, pure oils, vegetable butters, essential oils, …. When good quality, they are loaded with natural ingredients that will clean, nourish, protect and invigorate your hair.
Clays are excellent hair care because they deep clean your scalp – that is very often subject to daily aggression such as pollution. In addition to being purifying, it also helps to rebalance the secretion of sebum. There are several types of clay: white clay (kaoline), pink clay, red clay, green clay, … to choose according to the sensitivity of your scalp. For example, the white clay is softer than the others, and is the one recommended for dry hair whose scalp is much more sensitive.
There is a wide variety of ayurvedic plants and each of them has specific properties to meet a multitude of needs. At Zen Garden for example, we use orange powder (ayurvedic) in our shampoo for greasy hair because it is known for its washing and detangling properties (that we expect from a quality shampoo) but also strengthens the hair by stimulating the scalp and makes your hair shinier and softer.
Pure oils and butters
Their virtues for the hair are well known. They are numerous and each type of hair finds its happiness – including greasy hair! Organic unrefined coconut oil (which you will find in all our solid shampoos) is a must.
In addition to their fragrance, some essential oils boost the hair: they can make your hair shinier, stronger, …
All the ingredients will work in harmony to boost your hair health.
Solid shampoos are also great when you travel
If like me, you love traveling, and you often fly, you understand the hassle with bottles of shampoo, which require us to put our baggage in the hold… A real waste of time, especially once arrived at our destination, as well as money expense we would all want to avoid. Solid shampoo will easily pass in your hand luggage. On top of that, it lasts longer!
A long-term economic alternative
When washing your hair with a solid shampoo, only one wash is necessary to cleanse your scalp and hair. Depending on the length of your hair, it can replace one to two bottles of shampoo in a plastic container.
But be careful and make sure you select a good quality solid shampoo
Like in everything, there are solid shampoos that are more aggressive than others! We strongly advise you to take a solid shampoo without sulfate. Solid shampoos are often composed of one or two surfactants (surfactants are the ingredients that create the foam of your shampoo). If you see in the INCI code any of these ingredients, run!
- Sodium coco-sulfate
- Sodium Dodecylsulfate
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
- Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate
- PEG-8 lauryl ether sulfate
- Sodium Myreth Sulfate
- Sodium Laureth-8 Sulfate
The cosmetic industry likes these surfactants because they are very cheap and because of marketing reasons! Indeed, these surfactants foam enormously, and this is, for many people, a guarantee of effectiveness. This allows them to offer shampoos for £2 – £3. The problem is that sulfate is super detergent (and this is also why it is also found in most cleaning products, dishwashing liquid: D), irritant, desiccant and allergen. Basically it is super aggressive with your hair! The harmful effects of these surfactants are nevertheless hidden, since these shampoos also contain silicone, which will make your hair shiny, but which can also damage them in the long term.
At Zen Garden we have chosen gentle surfactants that respect the balance of your scalp: Sodium Cocoyl isethionate, Decyl Glucoside and Babassuamidopropyl betaine. These are ALL of plant origin. And in addition they are all biodegradable, so ecologically safe.
Adopting solid shampoo means moving to green cosmetics without compromising!
To conclude: more ethical and environmentally friendly measures are still – too often – seen by some as restrictions or a decline in their current quality of life. A sad prejudice because in reality, many products that are more environmentally friendly are also much better for your well-being and your health!
